It’s football season!

Fan celebrating a victory at a American football gameFinally! We’ve been waiting for SO long for this season to start, and it’s finally here.

Football is what really lets you know that fall is just around the corner. You may be anticipating pumpkin spice everything and warm cozy sweaters as the heralds of the next season. But you have to agree that there’s just something about football that encourages a sense of community and fun.

If you play football or have an athlete in your home, your take on football might be a little different. You share the love of the game, but you are also much more aware of its impact on the body. With that in mind, you’re probably thinking a lot more about a sports massage than about when a pumpkin spice latte will be available.

The dictionary definition of sports massage is: “a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries.” For athletes, sports massage can help with more than pain and soreness after a workout or game. It can help with range of motion and muscle recovery. Keep in mind that a massage has numerous physical and psychological benefits. A sports massage, though, is designed specifically to address the unique stresses endured by an athlete’s body.

At Jon’Ric International Massage & Wellness Spa, our sports massage combines several techniques, focusing on those specific actions that will assist in muscle recovery and relieving pain and soreness. A sports massage can focus on specific areas of the body or it can be a full-body treatment. Your massage therapist will begin each session with a short consult. Book today!

What to keep in mind if you’re anxious about a massage

Some people even have a regular appointment. But you just aren’t sure about getting a massage. And you think you must be the only person who feels a little nervous at the thought. You’re not. We promise.

If you haven’t booked a massage with one of our great therapists because you are worried about feeling uncomfortable, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Your massage therapist is concerned about your comfort! Our massage therapists will do all they can to help you feel comfortable. This includes talking to you about your expectations and concerns before your session begins. One of the main purposes of a massage is to help you feel relaxed, so talk about your anxiety with your therapist. Keep in mind that many massage therapists are quiet during a massage to allow you to relax and to focus on doing a good job. But this doesn’t mean you can’t talk during a massage! If you have a question or request, voice it.
  2. Worried about taking off your clothes? This is probably one of the most common misconceptions about massage. You do not have to disrobe completely! You can undress to your comfort level. And you will be draped during the massage. If you do prefer to remain completely clothed, your clothes may keep you from feeling the full benefits of the massage. So you’ll want to keep that in mind when you are picking out what to wear.
  3. It should not be painful. If you are experiencing pain, let your massage therapist know. Massage therapists are highly trained. So if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, your therapist will want to know. If you have any medical issues that might cause pain, remember to mention those during the consultation before your session begins.

It’s not uncommon to be nervous before a massage – especially if you’ve never had one or if you are going to a new massage therapist. That’s why our massage therapists will always start with a consultation. This experience is about you!
