5 quick tips for your health

29839791_MNo one knows your body better than you. We know you want to do your part to keep it healthy, but sometimes we get so busy that we take our bodies for granted. You can’t afford not to take care of your body, though. Because when it comes to your health, it’s all about you!

These 5 tips can help.

  1. Eat a balanced diet. You don’t have to follow a super strict, super boring meal plan. Just make sure that you are getting a well-balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meats.
  2. Exercise daily. Guess what? You don’t have to follow a super strict workout plan, either. Take some time every day to get up and move. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away from the door. Invite friends to play a game of disc golf after work. Join a yoga class. Do something that is fun for you!
  3. Get enough sleep. Now this one can sometimes be tricky. You really do have to discipline yourself to get in bed at a reasonable hour each night. Start powering down a little while before you want to go to sleep. Turn off the electronics. Don’t exercise right before you go to bed. And avoid drinking alcohol late at night.
  4. Take care of the pain. While we all have to deal with minor aches and pains now and then, only you know when something more is going on in your body. Just don’t ignore a message your body is sending because your to-do list is a mile long. Don’t wait until minor symptoms turn into major pain before addressing those messages, either. When aches and pains do persist, take the time to seek relief. Our massage therapists will begin each session with a short consult, which gives you the chance to share any issues or concerns you have. Maybe you need to schedule a chiropractic adjustment with Dr. Barry. He will also first assess your situation to see if yours is a chiropractic case. If not, you’ll be referred to another healthcare professional better suited for your needs.
  5. Pamper yourself. You don’t have to have aches and pains to have a massage. It’s a great way to relax! What about treating yourself to a fabulous new color for fall? Did you know we are offering a free cut with any color service right now? Maybe you could use some extra care for your skin. This month, take $15 off any facial service (excludes mini-facial). Pampering yourself is the perfect way to relax and relieve some stress. And relieving stress is an important part of taking care of you!

3 reasons to love a massage

24371288_SThere’s lots to love about a massage. But we’ve narrowed it down to our top 3. We’re sure they’ll soon be on your list, too!

  1. Relieve aches, pains, and stress. Research supports massage as a viable way to help relieve aches and pains. Do you sit at a desk all day? Are you on your feet for long periods? Do you work out? Are you involved in sports? Any one of these can contribute to joint pain, backaches, or neck pain. Maybe (and we don’t always like to admit this one) it’s just general pain associated with (sigh) aging. And what about the stress? Being stressed doesn’t mean you aren’t happy with your life. It just means that, like pretty much all of us, you have a lot going on! Again, research shows that massage can help relieve stress. Did you know that stress can actually contribute to aches and pains? So getting a massage is truly a win/win!
  2. Save money. Sure, a massage has an out-of-pocket cost. But so does going to the doctor. Don’t look at a massage as a splurge. Look at it as a way to avoid more substantial costs down the road. If you ignore those aches and pains, they will only get worse. Eventually, the cost of addressing those can build up. Keep in mind that with a membership, you can get a monthly massage and 20% off additional services
  3. Relax your mind and body. Finally, you need to relax. Taking the time to let both your mind and your body slow down is important. Everyone needs time to stop and just be. You will feel refreshed and restored.

We’re planning a blood drive

Jon Ric International Massage and Wellness Spa is in the initial planning phase with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive at our spa. Part of the process is building enough interest for the Red Cross to come out. The Red Cross has provided us with a survey and the results will determine whether or not we can bring another blood drive to our community. There are also community blood drives already scheduled to be hosted in town. So that we add value to the cause we don’t want to detract from the already scheduled drives.

With that said we are looking at a Sunday February 11, 2018. Please let us know your interest by completing the following survey.

It’s football season!

Fan celebrating a victory at a American football gameFinally! We’ve been waiting for SO long for this season to start, and it’s finally here.

Football is what really lets you know that fall is just around the corner. You may be anticipating pumpkin spice everything and warm cozy sweaters as the heralds of the next season. But you have to agree that there’s just something about football that encourages a sense of community and fun.

If you play football or have an athlete in your home, your take on football might be a little different. You share the love of the game, but you are also much more aware of its impact on the body. With that in mind, you’re probably thinking a lot more about a sports massage than about when a pumpkin spice latte will be available.

The dictionary definition of sports massage is: “a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries.” For athletes, sports massage can help with more than pain and soreness after a workout or game. It can help with range of motion and muscle recovery. Keep in mind that a massage has numerous physical and psychological benefits. A sports massage, though, is designed specifically to address the unique stresses endured by an athlete’s body.

At Jon’Ric International Massage & Wellness Spa, our sports massage combines several techniques, focusing on those specific actions that will assist in muscle recovery and relieving pain and soreness. A sports massage can focus on specific areas of the body or it can be a full-body treatment. Your massage therapist will begin each session with a short consult. Book today!

What to keep in mind if you’re anxious about a massage

14664053 - pretty european woman over white biting her lipYou hear people rave about the awesome massage they had. Others can’t wait until they can book one. Some people even have a regular appointment. But you just aren’t sure about getting a massage. And you think you must be the only person who feels a little nervous at the thought. You’re not. We promise.

If you haven’t booked a massage with one of our great therapists because you are worried about feeling uncomfortable, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Your massage therapist is concerned about your comfort! Our massage therapists will do all they can to help you feel comfortable. This includes talking to you about your expectations and concerns before your session begins. One of the main purposes of a massage is to help you feel relaxed, so talk about your anxiety with your therapist. Keep in mind that many massage therapists are quiet during a massage to allow you to relax and to focus on doing a good job. But this doesn’t mean you can’t talk during a massage! If you have a question or request, voice it.
  2. Worried about taking off your clothes? This is probably one of the most common misconceptions about massage. You do not have to disrobe completely! You can undress to your comfort level. And you will be draped during the massage. If you do prefer to remain completely clothed, your clothes may keep you from feeling the full benefits of the massage. So you’ll want to keep that in mind when you are picking out what to wear.
  3. It should not be painful. If you are experiencing pain, let your massage therapist know. Massage therapists are highly trained. So if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, your therapist will want to know. If you have any medical issues that might cause pain, remember to mention those during the consultation before your session begins.

It’s not uncommon to be nervous before a massage – especially if you’ve never had one or if you are going to a new massage therapist. That’s why our massage therapists will always start with a consultation. This experience is about you!

No time to relax

8581034 - young woman reading a book lying in a hammockDo you find it hard to take time out of your schedule to do something fun for you? If so, you aren’t alone. Lots of people seem to have a hard time slowing down even for the really important stuff. Finding time for family and friends can be challenging. Finding time for you may simply seem, well, selfish. But time for yourself isn’t selfish. It is necessary. Taking time for yourself allows you to refresh your mind and your body.

While it is true that spending time with family and friends has health benefits, spending time alone is also beneficial to your well being. You need to find some time to do what you enjoy, whether it is reading a book, hiking a trail, or enjoying a relaxing spa day alone.

On the other hand, sometimes your special time might mean spending a day with a special someone, so carving out time for an activity with a friend or spouse—if that activity is something you really look forward to —counts as pampering for you. (Maybe a girls’ day for hair and nails or a duet massage with your significant other!)

But don’t skip time alone either.

What’s most important is that you do something that helps you relax. You’ll find that you have the energy to keep up with all your other responsibilities when you carve out a little time for yourself. In your busy life, you might think you don’t have time to relax. But it’s important to take time for yourself.

Sit up straight!

36346548_SStop right this minute, as you are reading this blog, and take stock of your posture. Are you slumped over at your desk? Are you lying on the sofa? Are you kicked back in your favorite chair? Are you on a bench in the park on your lunch break or walking down the sidewalk as you read?

No matter what you are doing as you read this, sitting, reclining or standing, your posture probably isn’t great. Really. Most of us do not hold our phones or other devices up so that we can look at them without slumping or tilting our heads forward. And have you thought about what that is doing to your neck and spine?

Many people already suffer from neck and back pain. It may be due to sitting for long periods of time at a desk, from heavy lifting or from repetitive movements at work. Whatever the cause, you don’t want to add to it while you’re catching up on the news or on what your friends are doing (or while you’re reading an awesome blog like this!). According to Kenneth K. Hansraj, the Chief of Spine Surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, the strain on your neck increases the more you tilt your head forward.

We’re ready to help relieve that pain! A massage by one of our great therapists can help reduce pain and leave you feeling relaxed. If the pain is more serious, book an appointment with our on-site chiropractor. In the meantime, limit the amount of time you look down at your phone. Periodically stretch your neck. And pay attention to your posture.

Eat healthy. Summer is the perfect time to fill up on seasonal fruits and veggies. When it’s hot, cooking can become a dreaded chore. The good news is that with so many fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables available, you can create some ahh-mazingly cool, delicious and healthy summer meals.

Have a spa-ahh day. Of course you can’t say spa without “ahhh”! What better way to relax than with a day (or even an hour if time is tight) at the spa. You can take time for yourself, share it with your significant other, or have a day out with friends. No matter – you’ll be refreshed and ready to go. The cure for the Worst. Day. Ever.

34525604 - humor illustration of a frazzled woman screamingYou’ve had them. We all have.

Worst. Day. Ever.

Worst. Maybe your day started off badly and just went downhill from there. Or maybe your day started off okay but hopped onto the path toward bad then to worse, say, around mid-afternoon. Or maybe over the course of the day it has just been one little thing after another, and all of those individually inconsequential bads have come together to make one big bundle of WORST.

Day. Your alarm goes off but you hit snooze one too many times. Which means your day has just started and you’re already behind. So you skip breakfast, rush through your morning routine, speed to work (not a ticket today, please!), and finally reach your destination – frazzled before your day even gets going. You have to make it through a day of work, then on to a commitment or two after work, and maybe end the day with a little laundry or house cleaning.

Ever. There can’t possibly be another day like this one in store. Right? Luckily, our minds and bodies are amazingly resilient. We somehow find the inner strength to get through the day and wake up with renewed optimism and hope that tomorrow will be better.

Especially if you have the cure.

The Cure. You’ll be much more productive and much better prepared to handle all of the little darts life throws at you on a day-to-day basis if you take the time to relax, refresh, and restore. Really. You may think you just can’t fit it into your schedule, but you need to. You need a break. Go for a walk. Meditate. Get a massage or facial. Maybe do all three. Did you know that a mini facial only takes 25 minutes? And our massage services are designed to meet each individual client’s needs. Let us help you turn your worst day ever into a Best. Day. Ever.

Why we love a great massage

Spa massage outdoorWhen it comes to doing something for yourself, it’s a necessity to help you keep doing what you need to do. You love your job. You love your family. You love your friends. You love your routine. But to meet all of your responsibilities and actually enjoy life, you have to make sure you are taking time for yourself.

Getting a massage is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Here’s why we love a great massage – and you will too:

1. Relax.

Did you know taking time to relax is important to your well-being? Don’t you look forward to those times when you can just set aside the day-to-day worries and relax? Massage is a great way to do just that! Our massage therapists begin each session with a short consult, you can let your therapist know that your goal is to relax. You can even add the scent of a locally made candle to be lit during the massage.

2. Refresh.

Did you know you will be more productive and better able to problem solve if you get away from work and do something for yourself for a little while? Research has shown that taking breaks helps, and getting a massage is the perfect choice! Not only will your body feel refreshed, but your mind will be rejuvenated as well.

3. Restore.

Did you know that massage has health benefits? Really. Massage is about much more than relaxation. Massage therapy can help treat a long list of health issues. According to Mayo Clinic, these include: anxiety, digestive problems, fibromyalgia, headaches and even insomnia. In addition, massage therapy can address pain (including back and neck pain) and injuries (including muscles strains and sports injuries). Massage can help restore your body.

Getting a massage isn’t just about taking the time to get away from everything. It is about taking the time to make sure you are ready for anything.
