Enjoying the fresh air and sunshine?

10330223 - active family jogging outdoors in beautiful summer landscapeDo you find yourself being more active now that summer is approaching? That’s great. When people are able to get outdoors, they engage in more physical activity. Good news – considering how important that activity is to your health. And the fresh air and vitamin D are great for you, too.

But what about the aches, pains and strains that are a normal part of physical activity? You don’t have to let them keep you down. We can help. Here’s how:

Massage services.

We offer a full range of massage services, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and sports massage. A Swedish massage will focus on relaxation, relieving tension and loosening minor muscle knots. A deep tissue massage uses firmer pressure than the Swedish massage and may focus on specific areas or can be a full-body experience. A sports massage combines several techniques to assist in muscle recovery and relieve pain and soreness.

Chiropractic services.

Dr. Timothy Barry likes to focus on the family and sports chiropractic. Whether you are an athlete who maintains the same level of physical activity year round or someone who enjoys being active with friends on the weekends, Dr. Barry looks forward to seeing you. His priority is to help you make an informed health choice for yourself and your family. So give him a call if you have any questions about chiropractic, sports injuries, rehabilitation or stretching at 615.283.4257.

Salon services.

When you head outdoors, it is important to keep your hair and skin healthy, too. Sun and wind can be hard on your hair and skin. We have a wide range of services to address your needs. For example, the Luminous “C” & “Sea”® Mask Treatment is excellent for sunbathers and anyone with sun-damaged skin. Our professionals will work with you to choose the perfect products for your skin or hair situation.

It’s the perfect time of year to get out and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. And we’re here to help keep you going strong and looking great while you do it!

Can you feel it?

39451425 - business people rush hour walking commuting city conceptLife. Does it feel like you are moving at top speed through it, being bumped and buffeted from all directions? Life is full of adventures and challenges. And keeping up with everything you need and want to do can sometimes leave you feeling a little bruised. It doesn’t mean you aren’t enjoying life. It does mean that you need to make an effort to slow down now and then. Consider these four reasons you deserve a massage:

  1. You work hard – and you can feel it. Whether you sit behind a desk most of the time or are on your feet most of the day, work is tiring. You give it your all every day because you know that success takes effort.
  2. You play hard – and you can feel it. Physical activity isn’t only fun – it is good for you too! So get out there and move. But all of that moving can leave your muscles sore and aching.
  3. You’ve been a little stressed – and you can feel it. Stress is just part of life. Besides the mental and emotional exhaustion that accompanies it, stress can take a physical toll on your body. Chronic stress can even cause long-lasting issues, like gastrointestinal problems and cardiovascular problems.
  4. You just deserve it – and you can feel it! Sometimes we feel like we have to justify relaxing or taking time for ourselves. But you shouldn’t have to. You deserve some “me” time!

A massage is the perfect way to relax and refresh. So when you start feeling life, let a massage help restore you so that you can get right back to it.

Pamper your face

FacialHave you ever had a facial? If you’ve dismissed having one as a bit of pampering you just don’t need or have time for, then you should consider these benefits. (If you’ve had one, you may be getting some benefits you hadn’t even thought about!) Consider these benefits of having a facial:

Deep cleansing. This is the obvious benefit. A facial will deep clean your skin, leaving you with clearer pores. It will also remove dead, dull skin. Exfoliation can benefit every skin type. And at Jon’Ric International Massage & Wellness Spa, your Esthetician will work with you to choose the perfect products for your skin situation.

Improved circulation. If you want your skin to have a healthy, natural glow, a facial will help. Not only will it remove the dead skin, but it will also get the blood circulating, bringing more vitamins and nutrients to your skin.

Younger looking skin. As you age you lose elasticity and support in your skin. While having a facial won’t keep your skin from aging, it can help you have brighter skin. Your Esthetician can also help you understand which skin products will best help keep your skin looking younger.

Stress relief. The stress you deal with daily doesn’t impact your physical health only. It impacts your mental and emotional health too. And those effects can become very visible in your face. A facial is a great way to relax and relieve stress – and to erase those signs of stress from your skin.

Keep in mind that to reap the benefits of a facial after you have left the spa, you have some responsibilities to your skin. First, ALWAYS wear sunscreen. Second, cleanse your skin regularly. Third, pay attention to what you eat because a well-balanced diet is important for your skin too. Finally, make sure that you are getting adequate sleep.

With our full range of skin care services, you are sure to find the facial that is right for you. Book an appointment to pamper your face today!

Not sure if yours is a chiropractic case?

12390807_SWhen you think of chiropractic care, do you think of help for acute back or neck pain? Many people do. Chiropractic care is definitely a great option for the treatment of those issues. But chiropractic care can help with much more. However, some people are reluctant to visit a chiropractor because they aren’t sure if their condition really can be helped with chiropractic care. If this is you, don’t worry. At Jon’Ric Massage & Wellness Spa, we understand.

One of the most important aspects of a visit to the chiropractor is an initial assessment. What a relief to know you are being seen by a doctor who will assess your individual situation to see if yours is really a chiropractic case – and who will refer you to another healthcare professional if your situation cannot best be treated with chiropractic care. And that’s exactly what Dr. Timothy Barry will do.

In addition, Dr. Barry will treat your situation and educate you on posture, exercise and nutrition, because combining these and other treatment types can give patients a higher success rate and potentially prevent re-injury and lessen chronic pain. He likes to focus on family and will see all members of the family (including babies and moms to be). He also focuses on sports chiropractic.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, research indicates “that the services provided by chiropractic physicians are both safe and effective. The evidence strongly supports the natural, whole-body and cost-effective approach of chiropractic services for a variety of conditions.” Ready to see if chiropractic care is for you?

Share the love (and the fruit)

11986539 - apple - heartWhen it comes to a healthy diet, fruits and vegetables should have a starring role. But why does the apple get so much love? Is it really better than say, a banana or an orange at cutting back on doctor’s visits?

Apples are filled with nutrients that can be beneficial to your health, and the antioxidants in apples are one of the main reasons they’re so high on the list of good-for-you fruits. Antioxidants can help inhibit the growth of cancer cells and can help fight inflammation. They have also been linked to lower rates of cardiovascular disease.

But don’t other fruits have some of these same benefits? Actually, they do.

If you need more potassium in your diet, then you’ll probably want to grab a banana. Want to boost your immune system with vitamin C? Go for an orange. Joint pain? Eat some cherries. Need more fiber? Blueberries might be the way to go. In fact, no matter what fruit you choose, it’s good for you.

To give your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs to stay healthy, you can’t go wrong with fruits (and vegetables). Extensive research from around the world shows that diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables lead to healthier, longer lives. Sure, you can find vitamins and nutrients in supplements. But fruits and vegetables are delicious ways to get what you need.

And if you want more – a fruit-rich diet will improve your skin and hair health. So make sure that you include fruit in your daily diet. An apple is always a good choice, but you don’t have to let one fruit get all of the attention. Share the love with lots of other fruits and vegetable!

Relax for your health

Content couple enjoying head massages poolside outside at the spaAh, a spa day. It’s just what you need to relax.

But wait. Isn’t a spa day just a luxury? Something that takes up valuable time that could be spent doing those necessary things… like work.

Actually, a spa day is much more than a luxury. It actually is necessary. (Well, relaxing is necessary – so why not relax with a spa day?)

Relax. Refresh. Restore. These activities should be an integral part of your routine if you want to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eating a healthy diet and incorporating exercise into your day are also important parts of a healthy lifestyle. And they tend to get a lot more attention than relaxing. But relaxing also is important to your health.

We’ve all heard a lot about stress and its negative health impacts (higher blood pressure, increased risk of stroke and heart attack), so avoiding those negative effects should be a top priority.

Here’s how relaxing can help:

1. It helps keep your heart healthy.
2. It helps your body fight inflammation.
3. It helps your brain work better.
4. It helps lower feelings of depression and anxiety.
5. It helps you be more productive when you do go back to work.

With all of these things in mind, how can you afford not to take time to relax? You will be refreshed and restored. And we can’t wait to help with your perfect spa day!

Get moving

47297430 - happy couple on a bike ride in the countrysidePhysical exercise is one of the most important parts of living a healthy lifestyle. You have to get moving every day. You don’t have to run a marathon – or even train for one. You don’t have to spend an hour in the gym every day. But you do have to move.

Too many people equate an exercise routine with a strict gym regimen, but that doesn’t have to be the case. As long as you make some type of physical activity a part of your everyday routine, then you are on the right track! Go for a nature hike. Ride a bike. Play catch or shoot baskets with your kids. Swim. Dance.

Whether you are already in the habit of daily exercise or whether you are just getting started, there are a couple of things to remember. One is to start slowly. If you haven’t been very active lately, then don’t jump in and overdo it. This can actually cause more harm than good. Consult with your doctor if you have any concerns. Then start small. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you need to take care of your body after you exercise, especially if your workout is more strenuous or includes lifting weights. Your muscles will be sore. So don’t skip the cool down. You can use some exercises designed specifically for sore muscles like these from Shape magazine. Massage can also help with sore muscles by reducing inflammation and increasing circulation.

So get moving! February is Heart Health Month, so it’s a great time to start on the right path to a healthier you.

Breakfast – the most important meal of the day?

20626665 - happy man eating cereal for breakfast in kitchen looking at cameraYou’ve heard it many times before: “Don’t skip breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day.”

But is it really true? How has breakfast earned its reputation?

A good night’s sleep is important to your health. Your body uses that time to recuperate and restore. But when you wake up, your body also needs to refuel. That fuel comes from the food you eat. So starting your day with a nutritious meal really is important.

Eating breakfast is also important to help you control how you eat throughout the rest of the day. Research has shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight. According to the research, even though “people who skip breakfast eat slightly fewer calories during the day, they tend to have higher body mass index.” Why? One reason is because if you skip breakfast, you are more likely to snack on less healthy choices throughout the day.

But how can you get that fuel you need every morning? We all know mornings can sometimes be crazy. Or maybe you just don’t feel like eating when you get up. A little planning can help you make sure you start your day off strong. Setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier will give you just enough time to have a few minutes of quiet while you eat. Not going to happen? Opt for grab-and-go options. If you eat within a couple of hours of waking, you’ll still benefit. Consider these simple, quick and healthy breakfasts:

1. Fruit is always a good choice. Choose fruits that don’t require extra effort. Apples, bananas, pears are obvious choices. How about a bag of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries for something a little more fun? Add cheese for protein and you are good to go.

2. An English muffin topped with peanut butter, cottage cheese or avocado can go with you. If you have a little more time, add a cooked egg, spinach, tomato and cheese; then pop it under the broiler for a few minutes. For a special treat, try topping with this Swiss cheese mix topped with blueberries.

3. Yogurt. Plain or with just about any topping you can imagine. Nuts and seeds, granola, fruits and berries, honey, even hot sauce!

Breakfast is important to help you and your body get going. That said, you may actually need to delay eating for a little while in some cases. For example, if you exercise first thing in the morning, then you might want to wait until after your workout. The most important thing to remember is simply to make smart choices. Your body will thank you!

Time to get to sleep

50325497_SThe new year is well underway. In 2017 more Americans planned to make a resolution than have done so in years past. According to a Marist Poll, the number one resolution for this year was “To be a better person.” Traditionally, losing weight has held the top spot. It’s still there, tied at number two with exercising more.

One thing that didn’t make the list is to get more sleep. Interesting, considering that improving health is in the top ten. And getting enough sleep is critical when it comes to your health.

Sleep is one of those things that the body desperately needs to function properly. Unfortunately, it is also one of the things that Americans seem to think they can do without. In fact, over a third don’t get enough sleep. And according to the National Institutes of Health, sleep deficiency has been “linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.” If that isn’t bad enough, lack of sleep can have serious negative impacts on your brain and your emotions. Not only does your body recharge while you sleep, but your brain does too. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, then you are likely to have trouble making decisions (not to mention how good those decisions you do make will be). You’ll also have a harder time controlling your emotions.

And then comes the stress. Just as stress can make it difficult to relax and sleep, lack of sleep can cause you to be more stressed, which sets off a vicious cycle. When you sleep, your body and brain are getting the rest necessary to be able to handle the normal stress that comes with daily life.

Get some sleep so that you can be a better you. Some simple steps can help:

  1. Plan to get enough sleep. Set a bed time for yourself and stick to it.
  2. Find ways to relieve stress daily. Regular exercise is a great outlet for stress. A massage can also help relieve anxiety and stress.
  3. Relax before you hop into bed. Don’t exercise or eat right before turning in. Get off the tablet or phone. Have a little quiet time to give your brain and body time to wind down before you turn off the lights.
